Date: November 29.
Venue: GEUS, Øster Voldgade 10, 1350 Copenhagen
Program
17:00 - 18:00: Networking and Drinks
18:00 - 19:00: Presentation by Marie Keiding (GEUS) on the acquisition of new seismic data in Denmark for the green transition
19:00 - 21:00: Dinner with a talk by Gjermund Blauenfeldt Næss (Danish Energy Agency) on the upcoming CO2 storage licensing round.
Please note that online participation will only be possible for the presentation by Marie Keiding.
Speakers
Marie Keiding is a Senior Consultant at GEUS with a degree in geophysics from University of Iceland and 15 years experience in monitoring ground deformation due to e.g. CO2 storage, geothermal production, and landslides through use of remote sensing and microseismicity. She is involved in various activities on CO2 storage, e.g. as workstream lead for geological storage in the INNO-CCUS partnership, and is part of the project management of GEUS’s current efforts in mapping the potential for CO2 storage in Denmark.
Gjermund Blauenfeldt Næss is an Advisor in the Danish Energy Agency. He works in the CO2-storage team handling the framework, evaluation and supervision of the licenses for exploration and storage of CO2 in Denmark.
Acquisition of new seismic data in Denmark for the green transition
Since beginning of 2022, GEUS has worked on the maturation of eight potential CO2 onshore/near-shore storage sites in Denmark. New 2D seismic data has been acquired for more than 650 km onshore and 1450 km offshore over six sites. The presentation will present the progress of the seismic acquisitions leading up to the first onshore CO2 storage license round ultimo 2023/primo 2024.
Process and framework for CO2-storage licenses in Denmark
The CCS technology enjoys ample political support in Denmark. Since 2020 a number of political agreements have been reached, introducing several subsidy funds for CCS as well as a range of legislative and regulatory changes that has enabled Denmark to work towards establishing a full-scale CCS value chain with the aim of reaching its climate targets.
It follows from the Danish CCS strategy that Denmark also strives to become a future European hub for CO2 storage. In that context, Denmark has entered into collaboration agreements with Belgium, the Netherlands, Norway, and Germany to promote CCS as a climate mitigation tool. Additionally, in 2022, Denmark signed an agreement with Belgium for the cross-border transportation of CO2 with the purpose of geological storage beneath the seabed. This agreement was the first of its kind in an international context. A common agreement was recently signed with the Netherlands.
This year has been a particularly important year for CO2-storage in Denmark. Recent developments include the awarding of the first full-scale offshore exploration licenses for CO2 storage and the first injection of CO2 in the Danish part of the North Sea with the Project Greensand pilot project.
In the DEA we have the responsibility to further build up the framework for the offshore and onshore storage licensing rounds. The next big milestone will be the opening of the first onshore storage licensing round and the new main law on transportation via pipelines, being prepared these days, further enabling full-scale storage of CO2 in Denmark.
